Your Guide To Sunshine
How about you and I have a conversation about sunscreen? When we say that Evolve Apothecary is nurse-owned , we really mean that we are owned by a nurse and we use that background in selecting products for the store. We have been most particular with the sunscreens that we carry in the store, and the more we learn the more we particular we become.
There is still much research to be done on the effectiveness of sunscreens for the prevention of skin cancer. In spite of the extraordinary amount of sunscreen applied, skin cancer rates keep rising. In some literature, it is attributed to the depletion of the ozone layer, but there is newer research that is being done that shows we may not fully understand the mechanisms that cause different skin cancers, and that in fact, sunscreens may not be effective in preventing every type of skin cancer.
Sunlight can cause premature aging and sunburn, however, it also has many health benefits. Exposure to sunlight is critical for the body to manufacture Vitamin D. Sunlight exposure is also helpful in the treatment of depression and exposure to morning sunlight can help regulate your circadian rhythm.
When choosing sunscreens for the store we have chosen to only carry brands that use non-nano zinc and titanium dioxide. These are considered a physical sunblock, because the zinc and the titanium dioxide block the sun from reaching the skin physically, rather than some of the more controversial sunscreen ingredients that may be hormone disruptors(oxybenzone).
We strongly encourage you to check out the Environmental Working Group (EWG) sunscreen guide to learn more about sunscreen and its effect on your health. https://www.ewg.org/sunscreen/
Also, we only carry sunscreens that are rated a 1 on the EWG scale. We are particularly proud to carry Raw Elements, with its ties to Rhode Island.
Enjoy the summer, stay safe and feel free to come in and ask us about sunscreen!
